Wembury Review

PARISH CLERK'S ARTICLE IN WEMBURY REVIEW
AUGUST 2009

As always your Parish Councillors have been very busy on your behalf over the last few months.

The Parish Council now receive regular reports from the chairman of the governors of Wembury School and they have been making strong representation to Devon CC about the rebuilding of the school. The councillors instigated a meeting with the Devon Education department and hopefully, with the new administration in place at County Hall, a school rebuild will now happen sooner rather than later.

The planning application for the new allotments submitted by the Parish Council has now been approved and the allotments are in full swing. Lots of vegetables are being harvested and there is a waiting list for the allotments. In the same vein, the Parish Council have submitted an application on behalf of the Down Thomas Silver Jubilee Committee, for an extension to the hall and provision of a disabled toilet.

The improvement of the leisure facilities within Wembury Parish are going well thanks the sterling efforts of Cllr Bennett. The Wembury Youth Club have received a grant of £23,000 to upgrade the skateboard park and the children’s play areas in Wembury and Down Thomas have received grants of £6000 and £3000 for equipment upgrades. The construction of a multi user games area ( MUGA ) and an upgrade of a Wembury Tennis court are still being discussed with both South Hams DC and Devon CC to resolve funding issues.

The old dangerous seat, which was removed from Church Road Wembury, has now been replaced with a new one by South Hams DC and your Parish Council have replaced the damaged seat in Manor Bourne Road , Down Thomas.

Everyone in the Parish should have now received a copy of the Wembury Parish Plan and a leaflet identifying the way forward. The Parish Council will assist in bringing the plan to fruition, but it does need the active involvement of people within the Parish if many of the items mentioned in the plan are to become reality. We look forward to your involvement.

Sadly, Tony Romang has resigned as the Parish Tree Warden after many years of excellent service to the Parish. We thank him very much for all the time he has given to this important job. If you are interested in taking up this vacant post, then please drop me a line. Details of the job requirements are shown in a separate item in the Wembury Review and on the Wembury Parish website.

Finally, there was some recent concern about proposed development in Wembury as identified by South Hams DC. I am pleased to say that the Parish Council have put up a good case against such development. Only two areas are possible for development; behind the Odd Wheel Pub and at the top of Knighton hill and then only for a couple of houses at most. Full details are shown on the website under the News heading.

Wembury Parish Council meetings are regularly supported by members of the public, but if you want to see what your Parish Council is doing for you, then please feel free to attend one of the meetings. Details are shown on the Parish Council notice boards and on the Wembury Parish website. Comments can now be made to me through the website.
